Wednesday Wisdom: Avoiding Procrastination

22/11/2023

Transcript of the Episode:

Today's Wednesday Wisdom is brought to you by Kyle Richardson, consultant to Agility for All. Do you have a question? Post it in the comments.

The topic I want to talk about today is avoiding procrastination. Who doesn't love a bit of that? Sure, we pay for it and perhaps regret it further down the line, but while we're in it, while we're procrastinating, we tend to have a wonderful sense of winning somehow. Of course it's a fake comfort blanket, but like getting outta bed each day when you'd rather hit snooze, avoiding it is a tough habit to form.

So I wanna offer you a reality check, A reminder that you are kidding yourself when you assume that you can stall something today, because there's always tomorrow. Tomorrow doesn't always come. Of course, we hope that it will and you can do things to influence that outcome. You have zero control over the factors outside yourself, and that means you can't control the result.

This shouldn't depress you. It should challenge you to cross some things off your list that you haven't been getting done, if they're worth doing at all of course. You should also use this reminder of mortality to look over that list of unfinished or not yet started deeds and ask yourself this, "if I am dying today, would I really do this first?"

Here's a thought from the philosopher, Epicurus, the fool, with all his other faults has this also. He is always getting ready to live. So remember this, you are dying today. We all are. And I sincerely hope you will continue dying tomorrow and the day after, and so on for a very long time.

And that is today's Wednesday Wisdom. Don't forget. If you have a question post it below. Tune in next week for our next segment and catch up on past episodes on our blog page.

My agile journey began 10 years ago as part of a search to align what I do for a living with the person I want to be. I see agile first as a philosophy for life, and the way that blends with both Zen and Stoic principles allows for a more holistic work life. For me what I do is an essential part of who I am so it all needs to be done with equal kindness and compassion, upheld by a strong desire to enable others along their chosen path. Working in the software industry allows me to geek out on tech and be passionate about improving communication networks and fostering strong customer-centric cultures (after all, we are all each other’s customers in one way or another).
