Wednesday Wisdom: Experimentation and the Reverse Gear

Transcription of the Episode:

Today's Wednesday Wisdom is brought to you by Kyle Richardson, consultant to Agility for All. Do you have a question? Post it in the comments.

Today I wanna talk about experimentation and having a reverse gear. So knowing there's a way back from something you want to try out. A certain CEO I know often says "you can't break the company," and that's a really healthy way to look at everything you want to attempt in life. It's quite rare that some well-meaning action on your part will be unrecoverable.

So when you see something isn't working and you have the ability to try something different, try asking yourselves this, these questions. One, is what you are planning worth the effort? Does it potentially create more or better value for those affected?

Two, is it in the service of others? Is it motivated by more than just your needs?

Three. Is it yours to control That is you are not stepping on or over someone else.

And four, is there a reverse gear I can engage if needed?

If you can answer yes to all of them, then you can go ahead willingly, wholeheartedly, passionately. You don't need to be sure of success. You just need to know that you won't break the company.

That reverse gear won't always exist. But that's just an opportunity to involve others; conversation, a handsome healthy conflict, a how you move past a stuck state and get to action. So experiment, try and have a reverse gear.

And that is today's Wednesday Wisdom. Don't forget. If you have a question post it below. Tune in next week for our next segment and catch up on past episodes on our blog page.

My agile journey began 10 years ago as part of a search to align what I do for a living with the person I want to be. I see agile first as a philosophy for life, and the way that blends with both Zen and Stoic principles allows for a more holistic work life. For me what I do is an essential part of who I am so it all needs to be done with equal kindness and compassion, upheld by a strong desire to enable others along their chosen path. Working in the software industry allows me to geek out on tech and be passionate about improving communication networks and fostering strong customer-centric cultures (after all, we are all each other’s customers in one way or another).
