Wednesday Wisdom: Followership vs Leadership

01/11/2023

Transcript from the Episode:

Today's Wednesday Wisdom is brought to you by Kyle Richardson, consultant to Agility for All. Do you have a question? Post it in the comments.

Today I want to talk about followership and why it's even more important than leadership. Whether you consider yourself a leader or not, you must also follow someone or something. It's part of what forms your internal compass, which ensures that you are able to act in a way that is right and consistent with both who you are and who you want to become.

Who you choose to follow perhaps matters more than most of the choices you make. It doesn't have to be a real person, but I think it helps if it's at least a construct based on one or more real people. Sometimes you'll find people connected to the workplace that are worth following. Sometimes you won't, and that's okay too.

But make some choices. Have some guiding lights that help you aim for whatever feels like it makes you a better person.

And importantly, stop modeling your choices on people that are the opposite of that ideal. You only get one life, and to be the best you can in it, you need something true to aim for. There's almost certainly a list of people you watch, listen to or read who already challenge you to do more and find better.

What's important is that you learn to follow; to really connect with what they are telling you. And make it real in your own life. You'll end up a better leader and a better person if you make good choices and do the work.

And that is today's Wednesday Wisdom. Don't forget. If you have a question post it below. Tune in next week for our next segment, and catch up on past episodes on our blog page.

My agile journey began 10 years ago as part of a search to align what I do for a living with the person I want to be. I see agile first as a philosophy for life, and the way that blends with both Zen and Stoic principles allows for a more holistic work life. For me what I do is an essential part of who I am so it all needs to be done with equal kindness and compassion, upheld by a strong desire to enable others along their chosen path. Working in the software industry allows me to geek out on tech and be passionate about improving communication networks and fostering strong customer-centric cultures (after all, we are all each other’s customers in one way or another).
