Wednesday Wisdom: The Power of Liftoff for Teams

 In a recent meeting, we had a conversation about Liftoff and one of the directors said to me, "We like the idea of a Liftoff, but that seems like a lot of time to invest. Can we just do part of it?" Well, of course you can do things in half measures, but what image does that present to the team if you are short cutting from day one. 

Remember that Liftoff centers around purpose, alignment and context. Which one would you leave out? The next argument I usually receive is, "but couldn't we do fewer of the activities?" Sure. Anything is possible. But there is a reason to do each of them that helps build a team. 

I think for me, this is a little bit like a P.O.W.E.R. Start. If it isn't important enough to do one, then the meeting isn't important enough to have. Well, if you want to onboard a team in a way that is going to lead to greater teamwork, collaboration and higher performance, then start off the way you intend to go forward and put in the time. 

At most, the Liftoff will take a week and I'm not talking a 40 hour week. I would suggest that investing in your team is worth that amount of time. 

 And here at Agility for All we have proven over and over again that taking the time to invest in the beginning actually saves much more time later because the team knows how they want to work together and how they want to solve problems. They have not only talked about it, but they have practiced it.
